Mental health support

Research has shown that those who come through the criminal justice system have a higher incidence of mental health issues than people in the rest of the population. This is especially true of women in prison, who are five times more likely to be suffering from mental illness than women outside the prison system.
It is sometimes difficult to recognise someone whose behaviour is affected by mental health issues rather than anti-social behaviour; we work to identify people who need specific help in this area. We are committed to working with partner organisations and across different schemes providing mental health support. We seek to establish a good relationship and provide clear objectives for them as they go through the requirements of their sentence. This can benefit them and those around them, both family and friends and the public.
